Cachet
The artist, Robert Sarnoff, has been honored by the United States Government. The U.S. Postal Service celebrated the unveiling of a cachet stamp and matted print of Mr. Sarnoff’s watercolor painting, Ye Olde Jetty.
On August 11th 2004, a dated cancellation stamp, “Rockaway Beach Jetty Station” appeared on these cachets for thirty days.
The 140 year old wooden jetty has become an icon, representing the protection of the Rockaway peninsula, as well as symbolizing the preservation of this beach community’s strong values.
The residents of Belle Harbor, Neponsit, Breezy Point, all through Far Rockaway say, “This image has struck a chord.”
This is the first time in the history of the U.S. Postal Service that a local artist’s work was chosen to create a matted print and cachet stamp.
“Robert Sarnoff has helped put Rockaway, New York on the map.”
A limited number of these signed cachet stamps, “Ye Olde Rockaway Beach, NY Jetty, 140 Years of History”, are still available. Contact Robert Sarnoff.
